Things About The '80s Music Industry That Are Truly Messed Up

Image
Imagine being *SO PRIVILEGED* that one can 'hate' me for ... ... not liking Kylie Minogue. GOOD F*****G GRIEF!!!! I posted a response to someone who commented on Kylie Minogue; and I was pretty much on board with what they were saying... They said something along the lines of 'our very own Kylie Minogue' who had become an 'international superstar' etc. I responded by saying, 'with the help of some *very skilled PR*' and executives and the like. And of course, I got told I was 'making myself look dumb' and that I was 'supposed to be an artist'. I started off explaining (very calmly), that I wasn't critical so much of her as a 'performing artist' or human being - she got her 'humble beginnings' in acting (especially in the TV soap opera, Neighbours), and then her numerous hit songs afterwards.  Meanwhile, her sister Danni (Danielle) Minogue got her start in Young Talent Time.  As did Jason Donovan (who played Scott) and ...

Metal Inquisition - Article Review

http://metalinquisition.blogspot.com.au/2009/02/metal-inquisition-investigative-report_20.html Yes, I must admit that this came as a surprise to me as to what one of the world's *heaviest* metal band members actually do throughout their daily lives; and yet, on the other hand, it doesn't really surprise me. What I do know is that the members of Manowar sell plenty of albums, and live concerts at festivals worldwide - they must make alot of money. But this money doesn't last - the band also has expenses to pay, particularly when they are on tour and on the road: the road crew and logistics people, the equipment, the pyrotechnics, venues and the like.  These 'expenses' take a monumental proportion out of their incomes. Hence, they have to take on 'real jobs' in their spare time, and/or continue to live with their parents. Some of the replies to this post kind of make me sad, though - okay, Mr DeMaio has complained a number of times about poseur bands...

Article Review

How 90 seconds of rock can get you rolling? I haven't done any article reviews for some time on this blog, but someone posted this on my Facebook page, I just had to put my '2 cents worth' in. Dr Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic, a professor in human behaviour, noted various ways one can improve productivity in the work place.  And this included playing Rock Music 'mid morning' to wake up the minds of employees when it has been hours since they have had breakfast (or morning tea) but still have a while to wait before lunch (or in my case, since I had my first meal of the day, until the meal break during my shift, which is a night shift). And when the wee hours of the morning get a bit much, then it is time to *crank it up* in terms of 'heaviness', volume or speed.  Out comes the iPod, and on comes the Thrash (or whatever it is I am listening to at the time).  It's enough to keep me from getting bored at work while I am sorting mail - especially when I have ...

Ex-Iron Maiden singer, 52, jailed over £45,000 benefits swindle

I never thought the day would come when I would see that happen, but obviously I have. We can argue the ins and the outs about this:  the singer apparently was claiming benefits while 'working' (ie performing live in concert, and recording fresh material), and thus earning an income.  His claim was that he hurt his back in 1998 (my sympathy is with him there, because I too suffer back pain).  But he could still sing and (according to the authorities) therefore, work. How D'ianno was 'caught out', via a YouTube video of himself performing live in 2006. Yet, D'ianno lawyer argued that he had a lot of expenses, and actually lost alot of money over the years.  He also argued that D'ianno was 'naive' when it came to business matters and had little (if any) formal education. The consequence for his 'misdemeanours' was up to 12 months' imprisonment, and he owed £45,479 to the tax department. On the forum for the Daily Mail, the followi...

New Facebook page - Heavy metal for the 2011 census

This is for the UK census so I'm assuming the UK has it's census the same year(s) as us (Australia).  I can only speak for Australia on this, but I am certainly happy to back England on this.  Let's make this campaign worldwide, or at least get all the English speaking countries on board. The idea behind this is to list Heavy Metal music as a religion, because even Star Wars fans can list Jedi as a religion, so why can't metal fans list their preferred music as a religion also? I don't consider any music as a religion myself, but am happy to list it as a special interest, just like football (or any other sports, though some would argue their sports are a religion also), Star Wars (or any other sci fi movies or TV), or any other type of music. And special interests are obsessions which sometimes can be followed 'religiously', just like religious people become fanatical about their faith just like any other special interest group.  And anyone fanatical a...

Why I love Rock and hate the Dance scene

By Laine Michelle Allen (a friend on Facebook) Share Yesterday at 06:55 OMG where do I start....There's been a few things said about the rock scene lately that is really getting to my nerves and I had to get this off my chest.... Despite the fact one of my dad's favourite bands is ACDC he was being a bit of a smart ass to me and my cousin when he tried to prove rock bands don't last long.... so he asked "Name one band that has lasted over 10 years..... As much as I love my dad, my cousin and I shot him down in flames as the list went on: ACDC, motley crue, gunners, iron maiden, judas priest, bonjovi, kiss, dokken, megadeth, metallica, skid row.... omg the list just goes on. DANCE PEOPLE: Can you name any pop group who has been going for nearly twenty years, still producing albums to this day AND DOES NOT USE MUSIC ENHANCING to make themselves sound good. Another point of mine: half of it is remixes and voice enhancing effects to the point where I reckon with the t...

Chinese Proverb

I see, I forget. I hear, I remember. I do, I understand. Moral: You can only understand something by trying it yourself The relevance to Heavy Metal: you only understand heavy metal by listening to the songs and the bands, knowing the lyrics, knowing the fans, knowing 'what's not (and what's not)' in the heavy metal scene (in other words, what's popular and what's not), going to gigs etcetera etcetra. Let's break it down: I see, I forget: If you only see something once, say on Tv, or hear it on the radio, then you will have little chance of remembering. I hear, I remember: The more you hear it, the more of it you will remember. I do, I understand: But the more you immerse yourself in the scene (ie the more you do), the more you understand.
