Metal Inquisition - Article Review

http://metalinquisition.blogspot.com.au/2009/02/metal-inquisition-investigative-report_20.html Yes, I must admit that this came as a surprise to me as to what one of the world's *heaviest* metal band members actually do throughout their daily lives; and yet, on the other hand, it doesn't really surprise me. What I do know is that the members of Manowar sell plenty of albums, and live concerts at festivals worldwide - they must make alot of money. But this money doesn't last - the band also has expenses to pay, particularly when they are on tour and on the road: the road crew and logistics people, the equipment, the pyrotechnics, venues and the like.  These 'expenses' take a monumental proportion out of their incomes. Hence, they have to take on 'real jobs' in their spare time, and/or continue to live with their parents. Some of the replies to this post kind of make me sad, though - okay, Mr DeMaio has complained a number of times about poseur bands...

Ex-Iron Maiden singer, 52, jailed over £45,000 benefits swindle

I never thought the day would come when I would see that happen, but obviously I have. We can argue the ins and the outs about this:  the singer apparently was claiming benefits while 'working' (ie performing live in concert, and recording fresh material), and thus earning an income.  His claim was that he hurt his back in 1998 (my sympathy is with him there, because I too suffer back pain).  But he could still sing and (according to the authorities) therefore, work. How D'ianno was 'caught out', via a YouTube video of himself performing live in 2006. Yet, D'ianno lawyer argued that he had a lot of expenses, and actually lost alot of money over the years.  He also argued that D'ianno was 'naive' when it came to business matters and had little (if any) formal education. The consequence for his 'misdemeanours' was up to 12 months' imprisonment, and he owed £45,479 to the tax department. On the forum for the Daily Mail, the followi...

New Facebook page - Heavy metal for the 2011 census

This is for the UK census so I'm assuming the UK has it's census the same year(s) as us (Australia).  I can only speak for Australia on this, but I am certainly happy to back England on this.  Let's make this campaign worldwide, or at least get all the English speaking countries on board. The idea behind this is to list Heavy Metal music as a religion, because even Star Wars fans can list Jedi as a religion, so why can't metal fans list their preferred music as a religion also? I don't consider any music as a religion myself, but am happy to list it as a special interest, just like football (or any other sports, though some would argue their sports are a religion also), Star Wars (or any other sci fi movies or TV), or any other type of music. And special interests are obsessions which sometimes can be followed 'religiously', just like religious people become fanatical about their faith just like any other special interest group.  And anyone fanatical a...

Vera AKA Miss Adventure flirts with Miss Alternative

All, My friend (who calls herself Vera Metallum on Facebook and used to call herself Pagan Baby on Yahoo) has just entered the Miss Alternative 2010 'Beauty' Pagent.  Her decision to enter this competition prompted her to ask herself what is the definition of 'alternative'. This is a long 'essay' that she published on Facebook regarding the 'ins and outs' of being 'alternative' and what it means to be 'alternative'.  The essay begins with a definition of 'alternative'. Citing from http://www.dictionary.com/ , she states that an alternative (as a noun) is a choice limited to one of two or more possibilities, as of two things, propositions, or courses of action, the selection of which precludes the other possibility. one of the things, propositions, or courses of action that can be chosen. A possible or remaining course or choice. While as an adjective, it means Affording a choice of two or more things, propositions or courses...

Recently Single Al Gore Finally Able To Listen To W.A.S.P. Albums

NASHVILLE, TN—Finally unhindered by his wife Tipper's 25-year-long household ban on violent and sexually explicit music, former vice president Al Gore, 62, reportedly embraced his newfound independence this week by listening to the albums of the heavy metal band W.A.S.P. "For the first time in decades, I get to play the kind of music I like without someone nagging me about what a bad influence it is," said Gore, sitting on the floor of his living room as he cued up the song "Animal (Fuck Like A Beast)" on his stereo. "And I get to crank it up as loud as I want." "These guys are kicking some serious ass," added the two-term U.S. Senator. "Check out this guitar break coming up—it's nasty." Gore, who was prohibited from hearing music with graphic sex, violence, or drug references since Tipper founded the Parents Music Resource Center in 1985, confirmed yesterday that her crusade was "total bullcrap." In addition, G...

Article Review: Amy Binder - Constructing Racial Rhetoric

Binder, Amy: Constructing racial rhetoric: Media depictions of harm in heavy metal and rap; American Sociological Review; Dec 1993; 58, 6; ABI/INFORM Global; pg. 753 This article refers to the depictions of Heavy Metal and Rap in the Media, framed in terms of cultural beliefs. In other words, the portrayal of both music genres by the media is negative, and much of the moral panic surrounding the music has been generated by groups such as the PMRC (Parents' Music Resource Centre) and Moral Majority in the USA.  For those of you old enough to remember, the whole fiasco began in the mid-1980's when a group of politician's wives, who called themselves the PMRC, attended the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation.  Their objective was to reveal the 'sexually explicit' content in many rock lyrics, and most of these were Heavy Metal lyrics.  Their position was that such music filled young peoples' ears with violence and pornography, and glori...

2 really cool Facebook groups

These are 2 really cool groups for people who have faced prejudice because of their interests in different subcultures. Eternal Souls - Fighting prejudice against alternative people! http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=75446590234 Fighting Against Workplace Prejudice for Alternative People http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=33161623171&ref=mf This is the sort of thing I want to achieve for my fellow metalheads and goths here in Australia. So far, so good. With Eternal Souls, some of my Australian friends have joined, inlcuding Megan, Cathy (a girl I went to school with who I knew liked both Iron Maiden and the Sex Pistols back in those days), Gorgoroth (of Battlegod productions), Mike Young and Bence Kocsi. Some of these same people also joined the other group (Fighting against workplace prejudice for Alternative people). It is good to see some Australians jump on board - because the problem exists worldwide.

Genres Other Than Metal

Okay, for those reading this blog entry, you will probably be wondering what I'm talking about. Well, here goes. For the purposes of comparison with heavy metal, I have decided to coin the abbreviation GOTM (Genres Other Than Metal). This is not to say that GOTMs have nothing in common with Metal. For instance, some genres like punk, blues, hard rock or prog rock, can be very heavy. But a band like Pink Floyd, for instance, aren't quite the same as say, Motley Crue. Neither are the Sex Pistols, the Cure, or the Gang of Four are like Iron Maiden. Or neither could you say Muddy Waters or George Thoroughgood like Napalm Death? Or even Bon Jovi or Aerosmith have anything in common with Dark Throne or Burzum (even though they exist under the same category of 'heavy metal')? Technically, all these genres share some commonalities with Heavy Metal, because they are loud and distorted, yet there are some differences in the lyrics, the image of it's followers, or even t...

Introduction

Started this blog in response to Alternophobia (I think that's what they're called), but is more specifically about heavy metal, the bands and the fans. In other words, metalheads. Another reason was that I found out my Geocities site (powered my Yahoo) is no longer available, except through the Internet Archive Wayback Machine ( http://www.archive.org/web/web.php ) and Geocities Ws ( http://www.geocities.ws/ ). Part of this site was, of course, Logsnapper's Soabox, which I wrote about how I was treated and what it was like to be growing up 'Australian and Antichrist'. This is not to say I am against Christianity, or any other religion in any way, shape or form. The slogan, Australian and Antichrist is simply a song title by the Melbourne-based Black Metal outfit, Destroyer 666. When I examined the lyrics of this song, what I saw was not against Christianity per se, but a statement about what it is like to be a headbanger (Heavy Metal fan) in Australia. I was brough...
